Roger Federer withdraws from Rogers Cup Toronto, needs more time off

Swiss Maestro Roger Federer won’t be participating in next week’s Rogers Cup tournament in Toronto. The 17-time Grand Slam champion said that he needs to take more time off following his semifinal run at the Wimbledon Championships earlier this month. Earlier this week, world number two and Wimbledon champion Andy Murray pulled out of this upcoming ATP Masters 1000 event.

I have made the tough decision to withdraw from the Rogers Cup. Toronto is one of my favorite events on the calendar and I am disappointed that I won’t be able to compete in front of the great tennis fans in Canada. Looking ahead, it is best for me that I take more time after Wimbledon

Federer is still scheduled to have a busy summer hardcourt season, stating at the Rio Olympics where he will compete in three events. He won the singles silver medal at the London Olympics in 2012 and the gold in doubles competition with Stan Wawrinka at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It’s been reported that he will compete in three events in Rio – singles, doubles (w/ Wawrinka) and mixed (w/ Martina Hingis).

I look forward to coming back to Canada next year and I wish Karl Hale and everyone at Tennis Canada a very successful tournament.
