Sofia Kenin bounces back from Middle East slump, wins Lyon Open 2020 title

Reigning Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin battled through four consecutive three set matches enroute to her fifth WTA title in Lyon this week. The American is the tournament’s top seed.

Ranked fifth in the world, Kenin outlasted Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to secure the title.

The 21-year old American dropped her serve three times but broke her unseeded opponent on five occasions.

For Friedsam, ranked 136th, this is a productive week as the German has worked her way back after undergoing two shoulder surgeries. She has yet to win a singles title but has won one in doubles.

The victory in Lyon has pushed Kenin’s ranking to number four and she will now head back to the United States for the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells which takes place this week.
