Rome Masters Semifinal: Holger Rune defeats Casper Ruud, a win away from second Masters title

Denmark’s Holger Rune is now just a win away from securing his second Masters-level title after staging a comeback win over Norway’s Casper Ruud at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia or Rome Masters.

Rune rallied from a break down in the 2nd set to mark his 27th victory so far this season. Final score is 6-7, 6-4, 6-2. The Dane’s debut in Rome has been nothing short of impressive. He ousted defending champion Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.

“I had nothing to lose in the second [set], so I just told myself to play freely and enjoy it as I thought it would be my last set here,” Rune said. “I told myself to play aggressively and enjoy it and I did it and that was the key to comeback.”

Rune will be the one to watch out for at the Roland Garros tournament in two weeks’ time. He reached the final in Monte Carlo Masters and won a title in Munich. With a 13-2 record so far in claycourts this season, it would make sense to bet for him.

A title win will see his ranking rise to world number five.

“I really played some of my best tennis in the past two matches against Novak and then Casper,” Rune said. “Two difficult players to play, so I had to find my best tennis and I actually didn’t find it today, only at the end and that is why I turned it around.”

Rune won his first Masters 1000 title in Paris late last year. He will face either Daniil Medvedev or Stefanos Tsitsipas for the title on Sunday.
