Kim Clijsters surges into world’s top 20 after US Open win

Two weeks ago, Kim Clijsters was unranked. This changed this week following her heroic win at the US Open on Sunday, officially cementing the former world number one as the player to beat the second time around.

The Belgian is now ranked 19th in the world following her impressive finishes in her three tournaments. Earlier this year, Clijsters decided to make a full comeback in the women’s tour after a two-year hiatus from the game where she got married and started a family with husband Brian Lynch.

US Open runner up Caroline Wozniacki improved her rankings to a career-high sixth in the world. Semifinalist Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium rose from number 50 to 22nd in the world while surprise quarterfinalist Melanie Oudin of the United States jumped from number 70 to number 44.

The top three players are still the same. Dinara Safina remained number one with 9070 points, followed by Serena Williams with 7807 points and Venus Williams with 6645 points.
