The Heineken Open is considered the largest international sporting event in New Zealand. It’s been held in Auckland for the past 53 years and has been a key warmup event leading to the Australian Open, which begins on January 18. Last year’s champion was Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina.
THe $355,000 ATP 250 event is headed by Tommy Robredo of Spain. The top seed’s best finish in this tournament was a runner-up effort in 2007, losing to compatriot David Ferrer.
