Roland Garros 2011: Novak Djokovic walkover win won’t count, needs to win title to break record

Following the announcement of Italy’s Fabio Fognini to pull out of the scheduled French Open 2011 quarterfinal match against Novak Djokovic, many tennis fans are wondering if it can be counted as an official win for Djokovic. For those who are following the Serbian star’s progress this season, he’s gone 41-0 since January where we saw him win seven titles including the Australian Open. Djokovic is chasing John McEnroe’s record of 42 straight match wins in a season and a win over Fognini means the former would have tied the latter’s record.

Tennis officials confirmed that the walkover from Fognini won’t count as an official victory for Djokovic which means his streak still remains 41-0 going into the semifinals. He could potentially meet Swiss world number three Roger Federer in the Roland Garros semifinals and defending champion Rafael Nadal in the final – if all things go his way.

He gets to beat McEnroe’s record once he hoists his first-ever Roland Garros trophy this Sunday.
