Fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France defeated 2002 Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt during the opening round of the grasscourt Slam tournament at the All England Club on Tueday. The Frenchman posted a straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory.
Tsonga reached the semifinals last year after a sensational come-from-behind victory against Roger Federer in the quarterfinals before losing to eventual titlist Novak Djokovic.
This was Hewitt’s 14th consecutive Wimbledon tournament. With his ranking now in the two hundreds, he needed a wildcard to gain an entry in the tournament.
