Roger Federer wins fifth Cincinnati Masters title, ties Nadal’s Masters title haul

World number one Roger Federer became the first ATP player to secure five Cincinnati Masters titles after beating second-ranked Novak Djokovic 6-0, 7-6 in Sunday’s final. The men’s singles final became the first time that the top two players in the world have contested the title in this event.

“I’m obviously very happy. If I remember correctly, this was the first win here I had also after I had twins, right? So it’s great coming back here,” said Federer.

“I’ve been able to win five. It’s obviously incredible because I remember the first few here I struggled. Now looking back it’s just unbelievable. Plus this was probably the best week ever here in Cincinnati for me never dropping my serve and all that stuff and beating Novak in the final. This was very sweet. No doubt about it,” he added.

The title win also meant that Federer has tied Rafael Nadal once more in the most number of ATP Masters 1000 titles at 21. Earlier thsi season, Federer won the Indian Wells and Madrid Open – both ATP 1000-level events. He regained the number one ranking after winning his 17th Grand Slam title – the Wimbledon 2012 Championships a month ago. The Cincinnati Masters win is his sixth title of the season.
