Serena Williams overcomes injury scare at Australian Open first round

Overwhelming favorite Serena Williams dominated in her first round match at the Australian Open 2013 with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory over Edina Gallovits-Hall. There were some few anxious moments during the match for Williams especially when she fell awkwardly on her right ankle.

“I think I was really, really close to panicking because a very similar thing happened to me last year, almost on the same side, the same shot,” Williams said.

“I just had to really remain calm and think things through,” she added.

The 15-time Grand Slam champion said that she’s optimistic that she can continue playing in the tournament. She’s gunning for her sixth Australian Open title.

Her next opponent is Garbine Muguruza of Spain and Williams left no doubt that she’ll be competing.

“Oh, I’ll be out there,” Williams said of her second-round match. “I’m alive. My heart’s beating. I’ll be fine.”
