Del Potro storms to Japan Open final after defeating Almagro, to face Raonic for title

World number seven Juan Martin Del Potro is through to the final of the Japan Open Tennis Championships after winning his semifinal match against Nicolas Almagro of Spain 7-6, 7-6 on Saturday. Up next for the Argentine is Canadian Milos Raonic. This will only be the second meeting between Del Potro and Raonic with the the Canadian winning their match at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

This is the 25-year old’s 22nd final on tour. Quite impressive is that he’s already won two ATP 500 hardcourt matches this season (Rotterdam, Washington) and his final appearance in Tokyo means that he’s making a strong stride to qualifying at the year-end ATP World Tour Finals. He’s currently sixth in the standings at the elite eight-man event which takes place in London from November 4 to 11.
