Andy Murray might miss Australian Open 2014 if not “100 percent fit”

World number four Andy Murray might pull out of the Australian Open 2014 tournament if he feels that he has not fully recovered from a recent back surgery that he had.

“I’d be disappointed to miss the Australian Open because it’s a grand slam,” Wimbledon Champion said. “The tournament all the players want to play in.”

“When you start setting targets — especially when you’re coming back from having surgery on your back, it’s a serious thing to have done — you don’t come just to play a match or two at the Australian Open, if I come back I want to be in the shape to win it,” he added.

The 26-year old Briton skipped the Roland Garros 2013 tournament earlier this year due to a nagging back problem. However, the rest paid off since it propelled him to victory at the Wimbledon Championships, thus becoming the first British male player in 77 years to win the grasscourt Slam event.

“If I do get myself ready for it I will have had a long lead up and training block to get myself in the best possible shape. Whether I make it or not depends on how things go when I’m back on the tennis court, I haven’t been on the tennis court yet so I’m not sure.”

“I’m hoping maybe to hit a couple of balls next week, but very few and very light just to see how it is and I’ll start to progress from there, but still quite a way to go before I’m 100 percent.”

“I want to come back on the court when I’m 100 percent fit, I’ve been working very hard every single day to get myself back on court as soon as possible.”
