Stanislas Wawrinka to begin 2014 season at Chennai Open

World number eight Stanislas Wawrinka has confirmed his participation at the Chennai Open, an ATP 250 hardcourt event that takes place in Chennai, India. This will mark as Wawrinka’s sixth consecutive year to be at this event.

“I am glad to say that Chennai Open 2014 will mark my sixth visit to Chennai to participate in a tournament I have grown to respect and love. As always, I am really looking forward to experiencing, once more, the excitement and support of the people,” Wawrinka said.

The Swiss player has had a fruitful 2013 season which saw him qualifying for the ATP World Tour Finals in London for the first time. He made it all the way to the semifinals where he lost to eventual titlist Novak Djokovic.

Tamil Nadu Tennis Association President M A Alagappan said: “Wawrinka is a player adored by fans in Chennai and we are glad to announce that he will be seen in action this year as well. He has had a fantastic playing year and we congratulate him on his stupendous performance at the ATP World Tour Finals.”

Wawrinka won the singles event in 2011 and the doubles crown this year with partner Benoit Paire of France.

Chennai Open begins on December 30.
