Andy Murray hires Amelie Mauresmo as new coach for grasscourt season

British tennis star Andy Murray has finally announced his new coach – revealing that two-time Grand Slam champion Amelie Mauresmo will be coaching him, initially during the grasscourt season, beginning with the Aegon Championships at The Queen’s Club this week and the Wimbledon tournament where he’s the defending champion on both events. Murray ended a 77-year long wait for a British male champion at the All England Club by defeating Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the final a year ago.

Mauresmo is currently the captain of the France Fed Cup team and has honed several top French tennis professionals. A year ago, Mauresmo helped now-retired Marion Bartoli to win her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon.

Mauremos has a stellar career during her active years in professional tennis. She won two Grand Slam titles in Wimbledon and Australian Open. She won the silver medal at the 2004 Olympics as well.

“I’m excited by the possibilities of the new partnership and Amelie is someone I have always looked up to and admired. She’s faced adversity plenty of times in her career, but was an amazing player and won major titles, including Wimbledon,” Murray said.

“I have a very strong coaching team already in place, but I think Amelie brings with her experience and tactical expertise and will push us all to improve. Everyone I know talks very highly of Amelie, as a person and coach, and I’m convinced that her joining the team will help us push on – I want to win more grand slams,” he added.

Mauresmo shared the same excitement with the partnership.

“I’m really excited to be able to work with Andy. He’s an amazingly talented tennis player and I feel I have plenty to offer both him and the team around him. I’m looking forward to getting down to work and helping him win more Grand Slams,” the former top-ranked Frenchwoman said.
