Karolina Pliskova reigns in Linz, beats Giorgi for title

Rising WTA stars Karolina Pliskova and Camila Giorgi were featured in the final of the Generali Ladies Linz on Sunday and it was Pliskova who emerged the victor in the tightly contested final.

Pliskova was leading 5-1 in the deciding set before Giorgi found her range to win the next five games to lead at 6-5. Pliskova would go on to sneak her way back just in time in the tiebreak when she won the next three points after a 4-4 all score to secure the victory 6-7, 6-3, 7-6.

“It could have been a little easier, but I’m still happy I won the title,” Pliskova said. “After I was 5-1 up and she came back and had match point, I was already thinking I would lose, and that I would cry afterwards! But she was playing so well in that part of the third set. Before that she was making so many mistakes, but she stopped doing that and calmed down, and she played so much better there.

“Before the match I knew it would be hard because she hadn’t lost a set all week.”

Pliskova is having a great couple of years on tour. She won her first title in Kuala Lumpur a year ago and this year, she won two titles to date – winning the Korea Open a few weeks ago and this title.

“There are always things to improve. My movement isn’t that great. And my serve can be up and down sometimes, so we’ll have to practice that a little bit more. I’ll have to do some strength conditioning and running, too. I’m looking forward to it,” the Czech star commented.

Giorgi is now 0-2 in WTA finals.

The doubles event was won by Anna Tatishvili and Raluca Olaru after they defeated Caroline Garcia and Annika Beck 6-2, 6-1.
