Kei Nishikori has made his way to the US Open semifinals with less fanfare, though his defeat of Andy Murray in the quarterfinals certainly elevated his media mileage in the tournament. Nishikori had strong results during the summer – a runner-up finish at the Rogers Cup (l. to Djokovic) and a bronze medal finish at the Rio Olympics which includes defeating Rafael Nadal along the way. The Japanese tennis star avenged his Olympics defeat to Andy Murray with a tough five-set victory in New York. Can he make it to the US Open final for the second time?

Stan Wawrinka is no stranger to making this far in a Slam tournament – being a two-time Grand Slam champion himself. The Swiss did struggle early in the tournament, having had to save a match point against 64th-ranked Daniel Evans in the third round but asserted that he’s just a strong contender after dismissing former champion (but wildcard this year) Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarterfinals.

The previous Wawrinka vs Nishikori US Open match was two years ago with Nishikori winning in five sets. Their most recent meeting was at the Rogers Cup last month where the Japanese also prevailed in their semifinal encounter. Can Wawrinka stop the streak?

Winner: Wawrinka in five sets
