17-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic will extend his world number one ranking after the now-cancelled BNP Paribas Open 2020 Indian Wells Masters tournament.

If you haven’t caught up yet with the latest tennis news, the Premier Mandatory (WTA) and ATP Masters 1000 (ATP) event dubbed as the “Fifth Slam” has been cancelled at the last minute due to coronavirus concerns.

A local case of coronavirus (COVID-19) confirmed by the Riverside County Public Health Department.

The impact is going to be very significant considering that the event has lucrative prize money and ranking points at stake. Whether the event proceeds or not, the ranking points gained from last year’s event will drop as the rankings work on a 52-week basis.

In this case, Novak Djokovic only earned 45 points last year due to an early exit in the round of 32. The Serbian was eliminated by Philipp Kohlschreiber. As for Rafael Nadal, the Spaniard reached the semifinals which comes with 360 points.

After Indian Wells, Djokovic will increase his lead over Nadal. As of March 9, Novak Djokovic has 10,220 points while Nadal has 9,850.
