Grigor Dimitrov outlasts Andy Murray to reach Abierto Mexicano Telcel final, to face Anderson

Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov produced a major upset win at the ATP 500 Abierto Mexicano Telcel tournament after he defeated Andy Murray of Great Britain 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 in a semifinal that ended until 2:30 in the morning in Acapulco.

This is Dimitrov’s fifth win over a top 10 player. He had a chance to serve for the match in the third set but Murray broke that serve back which eventually led to a tiebreak decider. However, Dimitrov already established a 5-2 lead and never looked back to secure the victory in nearly three hours.

“At the moment it feels like the best win of my career,” said Dimitrov. “I always thought Andy was an unbelievable player. We all know how he competes. I was really happy with how I played today. I wanted to win badly. He doesn’t give up easily, but I’ll take that win in two tie-breaks.”

Dimitrov will next face Kevin Anderson of South Africa in the final on Saturday. The Bulgarian has a 3-1 series lead but their last match took place 18 months ago. Dimitrov is attempting to win his second career ATP title after winning his maiden crown at the If Stockholm Open back in October.
